Summarize a long PDF with AI (and check it)
Upload or paste from a long PDF and get a section map, a one-page brief with page references, and a list of claims to verify yourself.
Why it works
Long reports bury the few things you need. AI is fast at mapping a document and drafting a brief, but it can miss pages, invent page numbers or get a figure wrong. Asking for a map first, then section summaries, then a check of what the document does not say, keeps you in charge of the facts.
Step by step
Get a document map first.
I uploaded [or pasted from] this PDF: [FILENAME OR PASTE]. List every major section or heading in order, with a one-line summary of each. Confirm you reached the last section. If you couldn't read part of it (for example a scanned page), say so instead of guessing.
Fill in the [brackets] with your details before you send.
Summarize section by section.
Summarize each section in 3–5 bullets. For every important number, date or name, include the page or section where it appears. If you're unsure of a page number, write 'page unclear' rather than inventing one.
Combine into a one-page brief.
Turn the section summaries into a one-page brief for [WHO WILL READ IT: me / my manager / a client]. Structure: (1) what this document is and who it's for, (2) the 5 most important takeaways, (3) open questions or risks, (4) a short 'verify these' list of the key numbers and claims. Keep it under 400 words.
Fill in the [brackets] with your details before you send.
Check what it does NOT say.
Based only on this document, list: (a) important questions it does not answer, (b) any claim that sounds strong but lacks evidence in the text, (c) numbers or dates I should double-check against the original PDF. Do not invent missing information.
Replace anything in [BRACKETS] with your details. Works with most AI chat assistants. The ChatGPT and Claude buttons open a new chat with the prompt already typed in, and you press send. Gemini doesn't accept pre-filled links, so its button copies the prompt for you to paste. For steps 2 and later, paste into the same chat you started so the AI keeps the context.

Tips and cautions
- Don't upload confidential, client or employer documents to a tool your workplace hasn't approved. Use a private/temporary chat when your tool offers one.
- Scanned PDFs are images; they may need OCR first, or the AI will only see partial text.
- Verify every number, quote and page reference against the original before you share the brief.
FAQ
How long a PDF can ChatGPT handle?
Limits change by plan. As a rough guide from OpenAI's help docs, document uploads can be large (hundreds of MB), but very long files may be truncated or summarized incompletely. If the map in step 1 doesn't reach the end, split the PDF into sections and run the prompts on each part.
Can I trust the numbers in an AI summary?
No, not without checking. AI tools sometimes misread tables, skip pages or invent a figure. Use the brief to find what matters, then confirm the important numbers in the original PDF yourself.
Is it safe to upload work PDFs?
Only if your employer's policy allows it and the file isn't confidential. Strip personal data when you can, and prefer tools or modes your workplace has approved.
