Plan Thanksgiving dinner with AI: menu, shopping list and cooking timeline
Turn your guest count, oven space and budget into a menu, a combined shopping list, a turkey thaw date and an hour-by-hour cooking timeline for the day.
Why it works
Thanksgiving goes wrong in the logistics: one oven, too many dishes due at the same time, and a turkey that's still frozen on Wednesday. AI is good at that scheduling puzzle. Give it your real constraints and it can draft a menu, merge everything into one shopping list, and work backward from dinner time. Food safety numbers come from USDA, not the chatbot, so check those yourself (they're summarized below).
Step by step
Describe your dinner and your kitchen.
Help me plan Thanksgiving dinner. Ask me one question at a time about: number of adults and kids, dinner time, dietary needs or allergies, dishes that must be on the table, dishes guests are bringing, my oven (how many, and whether I have a second heat source like a slow cooker or air fryer), my budget, and how much I can make ahead. Then summarize my answers in a short list.
Get a menu that fits one oven.
From my answers, suggest a menu with a main, 4 to 6 sides, and 1 or 2 desserts. For each dish, list the cooking method, oven temperature if any, and whether it can be made 1 to 2 days ahead. Flag any oven conflicts (dishes that need the oven at the same time at different temperatures) and suggest a swap for each conflict, such as a stovetop or slow-cooker version.
Make one combined shopping list.
Turn this menu into one shopping list grouped by store section, combining quantities across recipes and scaling to my guest count. Mark items I can buy this weekend versus fresh items to buy in the last 2 days. Skip what I already have: [LIST]. Leave prices out; I'll check them at my store.
Fill in the [brackets] with your details before you send.
Work backward from dinner time.
Dinner is at [TIME] on Thursday. My turkey weighs [WEIGHT] and I'll thaw it in the [REFRIGERATOR / COLD WATER]. Using the thaw rule I give you here (refrigerator: about 24 hours per 4 to 5 pounds; cold water: about 30 minutes per pound, changing the water every 30 minutes), tell me which day and time to start thawing. Then build a schedule from 2 days before through serving: make-ahead tasks, what goes in and out of the oven and when, resting time, and a 30-minute buffer. Format it as a checklist with times.
Fill in the [brackets] with your details before you send.
Plan leftovers and cleanup.
Make a short plan for after dinner: containers I'll need, what to refrigerate first (within 2 hours of serving), 3 leftover meal ideas for Friday using what's likely left, and a cleanup task list I can hand to guests.
Replace anything in [BRACKETS] with your details. Works with most AI chat assistants. The ChatGPT and Claude buttons open a new chat with the prompt already typed in, and you press send. Gemini doesn't accept pre-filled links, so its button copies the prompt for you to paste. For steps 2 and later, paste into the same chat you started so the AI keeps the context.

Tips and cautions
- Use a food thermometer: USDA says turkey is safe at a minimum internal temperature of 165°F, checked in the thickest part of the breast and the innermost parts of the thigh and wing. Don't rely on a chatbot's cooking times alone.
- Never thaw a turkey on the counter or in hot water. Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours.
- Check every guest's allergies yourself and read labels; AI can miss hidden ingredients.
- AI doesn't know your oven. Treat its times as a draft and check doneness with a thermometer.
FAQ
How long does a turkey take to thaw?
In the refrigerator, USDA says to allow about 24 hours for every 4 to 5 pounds, so a 16-pound turkey needs roughly 3 to 4 days. In cold water it's about 30 minutes per pound, changing the water every 30 minutes, and you cook it right after it thaws.
Can ChatGPT make a Thanksgiving cooking schedule?
Yes. It's good at working backward from dinner time and spotting oven conflicts, as long as you give it your real dinner time, turkey weight and oven setup. Check food safety temperatures against USDA guidance and adjust the times for your own oven.
When is Thanksgiving 2026?
Thanksgiving in the U.S. is on Thursday, November 26, 2026.
