Negotiate a job offer with AI (prep, email and role-play)

Use AI to list everything in an offer you can ask about, build an honest case, write a short counteroffer and rehearse the recruiter's pushback before you reply.

Why it works

Many offers have some room to move, and not only on base pay: sign-on bonus, start date, paid time off, title, remote days or an earlier pay review. What usually holds people back is not knowing what to ask for or how to say it. AI is a patient prep partner for both. It can't tell you what the employer will pay, so the numbers come from your own research.

Step by step

  1. List what's negotiable.

Here is a job offer I received (personal details removed). List every term in it that is commonly negotiable, plus anything important that's missing (for example bonus, start date, PTO, remote work, title, review date, equipment or learning budget). For each, give one question I should ask the recruiter.
    Offer:
    [PASTE OFFER DETAILS]

Fill in the [brackets] with your details before you send.

  2. Build your case from real facts.

Help me build a short, honest case for a better offer. My relevant results: [LIST WHAT YOU'VE DONE]. Pay range I found from my own research: [RANGE AND SOURCES]. Other offers or interviews, if any: [DETAILS OR NONE]. Turn this into 3 short talking points. Don't invent numbers or results; if something would help but I haven't given it, ask me.

Fill in the [brackets] with your details before you send.

  3. Write the counteroffer.

Write a short, warm email to the recruiter for [ROLE] at [COMPANY]. Thank them and say I'm excited about the role, then make one clear ask: [YOUR ASK, e.g. base salary of $X, or a sign-on bonus]. Give one sentence of reasoning from my talking points. Under 150 words, collaborative, no ultimatums.

Fill in the [brackets] with your details before you send.

  4. Rehearse the pushback.

Play the recruiter for this offer. Stay in character and don't give in easily. Use realistic responses like 'this is the top of the range', 'the budget is fixed' and 'we need an answer by Friday'. After 4 rounds, step out of character and tell me where I sounded unsure, where I gave something away, and one better line for each.

Replace anything in [BRACKETS] with your details. Works with most AI chat assistants. The ChatGPT and Claude buttons open a new chat with the prompt already typed in, and you press send. Gemini doesn't accept pre-filled links, so its button copies the prompt for you to paste. For steps 2 and later, paste into the same chat you started so the AI keeps the context.

Tips and cautions

  • Look up pay ranges yourself from sources like government wage data, posted salary ranges in job ads and industry surveys. A chatbot's salary numbers can be outdated or made up.
  • Remove your name, employee ID and anything confidential before pasting an offer into any AI tool.
  • Get the final agreed terms in writing before you resign from your current job.

FAQ

Can negotiating cost me the offer?

It's uncommon for a polite, reasonable request to make an employer withdraw an offer, but it can happen, and you know your situation best. Thanking them, staying enthusiastic and making one clear ask keeps the risk low.

What can I ask for if the salary is fixed?

Try a sign-on bonus, a later or earlier start date, extra paid time off, remote days, a better title, a learning budget, or a written pay review after six months. Step 1 above helps you spot which ones apply to your offer.

Should I let ChatGPT tell me what salary to ask for?

No. Use it to plan research and rehearse. Base the number on current, real sources for your role and location, such as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data and salary ranges listed in similar job postings.
